Shenzhen gets the attention. Kunshan is the electronics manufacturing location most consumers have never heard of, and one of the most important in the world: a county-level city wedged between Shanghai and Suzhou that built its position by attracting Taiwanese contract manufacturers. The cluster logic differs from Shenzhen's. There are no open component markets and no wholesale electronics streets, so sourcing happens through direct engagement with large contract manufacturers and their tiered supplier networks, embedded in the Yangtze Delta's industrial infrastructure. Quality systems, process discipline and documentation tend to be strong, because the anchor customers are global computer and electronics brands with demanding audit regimes.
