Roughly seven of every ten sunglasses sold anywhere in the world come out of Wenzhou. More than a thousand eyewear factories on Zhejiang's southeastern coast make this the largest eyewear manufacturing centre on earth, covering frames and complete pairs, reading glasses and sport eyewear, with the whole ecosystem — lenses, hinges, decoration, packaging — produced locally.
Eyewear is only part of the picture. The city and its satellite towns also run deep clusters in footwear, particularly women's shoes, along with lighters, decorative lighting fixtures, pumps and valves, and low-voltage electrical equipment: the switches, breakers and terminal blocks that fill electrical wholesalers' catalogues worldwide. Hardware and metal products round out the list, across some 20,000 manufacturers in total.
How that industry is structured explains most of what a buyer runs into. Wenzhou was one of the first places in China where private family businesses took off after economic reform, and the 'Wenzhou model' — thousands of entrepreneurial small-to-medium factories, each specialised in one narrow product, clustered town by town — still defines it. Most eyewear factories are 50-300 person operations rather than industrial campuses: good pricing and flexibility, wide variance between suppliers.
Within Zhejiang, Wenzhou complements its neighbours rather than competing with them. Yiwu's market traders resell large volumes of Wenzhou-made product, and Ningbo, about three hours away, provides the main deep-water port alongside Wenzhou's own local one. Buyers running mixed Zhejiang programmes often pair factory work here with consolidation in Yiwu or Ningbo. UV400 protection claims are routinely false, so third-party lens testing belongs in every eyewear programme. Most factories will quote the same product at several quality tiers, and loose specifications get quietly downgraded — nail down materials, hinges, coatings and packaging in writing. ANSI Z87.1 certified safety eyewear is a separate speciality that most Wenzhou factories do not genuinely produce. And because the factories are small and family-run, verify capacity for large orders: subcontracting between workshops is common in peak season.

Paper Packaging
The shift toward paper-based packaging over plastic has pulled a lot of new buyers into this category quickly, and quite a few of them are getting greenwashed without realising it — 'eco-friendly', 'recyclable' and 'biodegradable' are used loosely enough in Chinese packaging marketing that none of them mean much without a certificate behind them. Dongguan, Shenzhen and Wenzhou cover most of the manufacturing, with pricing from $0.10 for simple mailer boxes to $8 for structured rigid gift boxes with premium finishing. Cardboard weight and structural rating are worth checking directly against a sample rather than trusting a spec sheet — a factory quoting 350gsm and delivering 200-250gsm is common enough to plan for. FSC certification is the more defensible sustainability claim of the common ones, provided the Chain of Custody certificate is actually verified against the public database rather than taken on faith, since claiming FSC without holding it happens often. For anything touching food, food-contact compliance (FDA or EU 1935/2004, depending on market) is a separate requirement from the sustainability certifications and easy to overlook if the packaging brief was written around aesthetics rather than end use.

UV protection is the one claim in this category that actually matters for health, and it's also one of the most casually overstated. 'UV400' on a hangtag means nothing without a transmission test behind it — cheap lenses sometimes rely on a sprayed coating that degrades within months rather than a UV absorber built into the lens material itself, and the difference isn't visible to the eye. Wenzhou handles the volume end of global eyewear production; Xiamen leans toward premium acetate work. Pricing runs from $0.80 for basic PC-lens sunglasses to $28 for polarized acetate or titanium-frame pairs, with lead times typically 25 to 50 days. Polarization is the second common deception — a lens that looks tinted but isn't genuinely polarized is easy to test with a second polarized lens or an LCD screen, and just as easy for a factory to fake with a surface film that scratches off. Frame material (TR-90 for volume, acetate for premium colour depth, titanium for lightweight durability) matters more for positioning than safety, but hinge failure under repeated opening is the most common physical defect worth catching in sample testing before committing to a production run.
